nanning, guanxi province, china

so diab had an extra week and wanted to get out of hk. i was going to go to yunnan province after vietnam but thought that it would be good to travel with a buddy. so we took off from hk and went to shengzhen to catch an overnight bus to nanning. nanning is a large city (dirty, noisy, smelly) just like any other in china. the difference was that it was diab's first experience in the country and he was surprised to find it so different from hk. it was really hot and we found this pool table in a small bar at the end of a street so we had a couple beers and played with this cool guy. we had a train to catch that evening for kunming so we didn't see much. here are some pics.

third week in hk

so govind showed up first from his little stint in india and by then tai had moved us into a cool hotel on the island in wan chai. he knew a guy who knew a guy or something and we got a great deal. the next day, when diab showed up from the uae, we had already made ourselves at home and had no problem moving him in. it was almost a 28 cecil reunion in hk. first, let me appologize for taking so long to post this. it was just such a busy week. the four of us went out every night all night, partied, ate, saw sights and had a blast. govind was obsessed with the fact that from the front of every 7-11 you could see another one down the street. diab couldn't figure out where all the people were coming from. and i was just happy to have my friends in hk to relieve some of the homesickness i had been feeling. we saw the word's biggest buddha. we took every form of transportation possible. we went to the beach. climbed victoria peak. mong kok, causeway, central, etc. spent some hard-earned cash but oh well. one of the greatest weeks yet. check out the pics. some of them belong to govind and diab but i can't tell you which. they are fun though. cheers, and again sorry for the delay. j

second week in hk

time is flying here in hk. already my second week. this one went by a little quieter than the last. played a lot of basketball, had a lot of great meals with friends and relatives of tai. went to a few clubs. slept in real late. spent more money on stuff. i didn't take many pics because, as i said, this was a relaxing week. when diab and govind get here i will do more sightseeing and then i will have good pics for all y'all. oh and i left my brand new cellphone in a cab last night so that phone number i gave in the last post is now obsolete. i have to buy another one. i am a twit.

hong kong is sweeet!

hong kong. the asian island city. the next atlantis? i am having a hard time describing it compared to other cities i have been in asia. it is modern like tokyo. it is western like shanghai. but it is altogether unique and vibrant, flooded with people at all hours, clean and very very hot. millions of people live on top of one another in soaring sky scrapers, so tightly packed together that from a distance they look like floating cities. but somehow hk manages to stay green and lush and relatively easy to navigate. anyway, on my first day, i walked across the border from china in like ten minutes. i took a train to the main tourist area in kowloon and checked stuff out while i waited for tai. he ended up telling me to meet him at his friends place and i took the transit and a cab to get there. well my first impression of a hong kong dwelling was a large mansion on a mountain overlooking the islands. it had four golf greens for chipping and putting, a gorgeous pool, there were nine dogs, two chefs (who made us homemade chocolate and caramel cakes with icecream), eight maids, i don't know. it was just crazy. then the guy's driver took us downtown where tai and i took the subway back to his place. the next day we went wakeboarding around the islands. tai's friend's yaght picked us up and we met up with his friend and his speed boat. it was a fun day but tai split his head and i didn't get a chance to go. got a great view of the city though on the way back as the sun set. we got tai some stiches and met up with some girls i met in shanghai and went to a cafe that was filled with cats. the next day i bought some baskeball shoes and a cellphone (that's right you heard me. i finally got one) my number is (852)97218106. went for a bikeride yesterday and met up with tai's friends and watched a movie. i don't know. it has been busy but i am having fun (spending a bit much but...). anyway, hope you enjoyed the pics from china. here are the ones from my first week in hk. cheers.

happy canada day

canada day. i was lucky to come across this bar where there were lots of canadians and free drinks for trivia questions. Posted by Picasa

longsheng

i took a four hour bus ride from yangshou to an area called longsheng where the mountains are all sculpted to grow rice. it is absolutely awesome to see and i hope my pics can do them justice. we arrived in a small village and climbed the mountains to get a great view of the terraces from above. i was planning on going to another town called sangjiang where there are lots of minority villages and more terraces with less tourists but the roads were all washed out in floods and i had to return to yangshou. the bus broke down on the way back though and took five hours. it is raining a lot these days so i think i will leave for hk soon. i look forward to seeing my buddies there.

longsheng is an area where there are huge rice terraces built into mountains. i can only imagine how long it took to make these but they are hundreds of years old. Posted by Picasa

in yangshou

i arrived in yangshou from guilin. this town is sort of what i imagine khosan road to be like in bangkok. there are tons of foreigners and chinese tourists and no lack of western restaurants. not really how i thought i would end my china tour but i am glad to be eating western food for a change. it is really beautiful though and not hard to get away from the modern town. i met some people in guilin and came to yangshou with them. we went rafting on bamboo rafts down the river and then biked through all these minority villages surrounded by ricefields and mountains. so beautiful. it rains on and off here but stays extremely hot and humid regardless. i don't know how much longer i will stay but it will only be a few days, as i have to get to hong kong soon. i will post the pics later.

guilin in guanxi province

i took the 24 hour train from shanghai to guilin, a pretty big town in guanxi province in south china. the city is full of natural beauty, which is kind of a nice break from the manufactured beauty of the gardens and temples i've been seeing in the east. here there are limestone mountains just jutting up out of nowhere throughout the city and it has a great effect reminiscent of what i would imagine rio to be like. anyway, i met some people on the train and we had a good time so the time passed. one girl from guilin offered to show me around so the first day we walked around to a couple parks and mountains. they were beautiful. we split ways around 6pm and i began walking in the direction i thought was home. i came across a chinese boarding school where kids were playing basketball. i joined in and before i knew it every kid in the school was gathering around watching the game. it was a lot of fun though. i left and got lost as the sun went down. i started to get worried i wouldn't find my way and being dehydrated and having sunstroke (it is like 40degrees and humid here) i decided to take an offer from a guy on a motorcycle to take me in the direction of home. this was the first time i have been on a mortocycle believe it or not. it was fun though. anyway, i made it home and i leave for yangshuo today. hopefully it won't rain because i think i left my raincoat in shanghai. i am trying to load pics but it is taking forever, i will keep trying though.

Hangzhou

hangzhou was a paradise after shanghai. we felt we needed a break from the glitz and glass of the bund and took a two hour train to hangzhou, a small (like 3million) town south of shanghai. it was really nice. good weather, hot and not too humid. we sat by this gorgeous man made lake and listened to music, drank this crazy chinese alcohol and played hackeysac. great time. the hostel there was fantastic, cheap and good food. the people were friendly and everything was just nice. i am going to go back for a little bit i think. will let you all know.
cheers.

this night was crazy

alright, well, a bunch of the guys from my hostel were feeling a little bit adventurous so we decided we were going to somehow make our way to the eastern coast of china to watch the sun rise. we thought we might take the subway to the end of the line and then catch the maglev to the pudong airport and cab from there to the sea. when we got to the train though it had stopped running but a cab driver told us he knew where we could go and the five of us crammed in for the ride of our lives. before we left, i said that it felt like we were in 'stand by me' and that we might see a dead body. well.... we did. the cab ride was scary to say the least. weaving in and out of cars and bikes on highways and country lanes at about 130 km/h, we came across an accident where a body was laying on the road. the guy was apparently riding a scooter and got hit by a bus. there were a bunch of people just standing around looking at it and the bus driver was keeled over with his head in his hands. you could see the windshield where the guy's head hit, it was all cracked and full of hair and blood. as it got dark, the ride became more precarious. our driver didn't put on his lights and we were barely missing the bikes and cars coming in the other direction. finally, we passed through a small fishing village and came to the water. he dropped us off on a large flat concrete lot by the sea and promised to come get us at 6:30 the next morning. we managed to scrounge some bamboo to make a fire and drank for a while, just talking and hanging out. then at around 11:00 pm a car pulled up near us. it was all suped up and didn't really look like it belonged in the area because it was poor as hell and the only civilization for miles around was this small fishing village. the car began flashing its lights out into the water. about 20 minutes later, a large boat on the water started flashing its light back as it came closer. we thought that this was a drug boat coming to make it's midnight delivery of heroin to shanghai. the car ended up driving down the coast to meet up with the boat. we didn't feel it would be safe to check it out. at around midnight, we ran out of booze so we decided to get some food and beer from the small village. we left the fire and began walking. the dirt road was littlered with crabs and the scuttled away from us as we walked. in the village, only one restaurant looked open so we went there. the people there were really nice and luckily we were able to communicate becaused dq is chinese. we ate lots and they kept feeding us beer. we played cards and chinese chess until about three. we eventually headed back to the camp fire and relit it. on the walk back though, there were about 30 people walking in the pitch black along the road, coming from the water. they were carying bamboo poles on their back with bags hanging from the ends. we asked if it was fresh fish or crabs but they said no. when we asked what it was they said they couldn't tell us.... we thought 'great' we were in the middle of a drug shipment on this quiet, concrete wharf. when we got back to the fire, at about 4am, a van pulled up and about 7 or 8 guys dressed in dress shirts and ties came out to inspect us. they asked what we were doing there and where we came from and stuff. when we told them that we were there to see the sunrise further down the coast they said that was why they were there too. then they got in their van and drove in the wrong direction??? once they left we decided to start walking east to where the coast turned north so that we could see the sun come up. we walked along this very long wall. on one side were fishing stations and comunist work camps where they made concrete block for some reason and on the other side was a large swamp. we walked for hours in a straight line. eventually we began making out this huge line that went out south into the water. as we got closer we could see that it was a bridge. it was enormous. it began as a suspension bridge closer to the land and then turned into a giant cement construct that spanned as far as we could see. the bridge, just at the horizon, arched a little and became flat again over the curvature of the earth. we kept walking towards it and and came to a work camp where the workers were just waking, eating, drinking tea and brushing their teeth in the ditches. there were 40 men and only one woman that we could see. they gave us some hot water for some cigarettes. from their home we could see that the bridge was even longer than we thought. there was a second arch way past the first before vanishing into the haze. when we looked at the map we couldn't see that there was an island anywhere in that direction. we couldn't see the sun come up because of the clouds so we headed back along the wall to where the cab driver was supposed to pick us up. there was another cab there instead so we hopped in and he took us to the airport. we caught the maglev, which is the fastest train in the world and headed home at 450 km/h. when we got home finally we couldn't believe that all this happend. i mean, we were drunk and tired but it was crazy just the same. thing is, we have no reall pictures of anything because dq lost his camera and i broke mine at the camp fire. so you are just going to have to believe me. i just feel lucky i am alive.
